Dynamic building simulation

Knowing beats estimating

While others size systems from experience, we calculate your building hour by hour through a full year. The result is equipment that is neither too large nor too small.

What this service covers

A static calculation looks at a single design case — the coldest day, the highest cooling load. A building, however, experiences 8,760 hours a year, each with different outdoor temperature, solar radiation, occupancy, and use. Dynamic simulation works through those hours individually and accounts for the fact that a building stores heat and releases it with a delay.

We do not use simulation only on our own projects. Because not every engineering office has the tools and the routine for it, we regularly calculate buildings designed by others — as a standalone commission alongside the ongoing work of a colleague. The division is clear: we supply the calculation and the assessment, the design stays with the commissioned office.

  • Sizing heat generation — the design heat load checked against the real annual profile, which often shows the peak occurring only a few hours per year
  • Summer thermal comfort — how many hours a room exceeds the comfort limit, which is what decides whether cooling is needed at all
  • Borehole field simulation — the field calculated over 50 years, showing whether the ground cools down long term and whether summer regeneration is required
  • Variant comparison — two concepts calculated against each other on the same data basis, with numbers instead of opinions
  • Projects designed by others — the calculation as a standalone commission, without taking over the design
  • Expert assessments — for existing systems with excessive costs or comfort problems, showing where the cause lies
  • Hourly calculation
  • Thermal mass
  • Summer thermal comfort
  • Borehole fields
  • Variant comparison
  • Commissions from other offices

How we work

Geometry

Architectural models in RVT, IFC, DWG, or DXF. For existing buildings a site survey is often enough.

Building envelope

Assemblies, U-values, glazing with g-value, and solar shading.

Use

Occupancy, operating hours, and internal gains — recognized standard values where no project-specific data exists.

Climate data

Location-specific climate data sets for the building site.

For borehole fields

Ground data and, where available, the results of a thermal response test.

On accuracy

A simulation is a model, not a measurement record. Its value depends on the quality of the input data and the usage assumptions. We always disclose the assumptions we made.

Scope of the engagement

What is not included A simulation does not replace the design itself. Where we calculate a project designed by another office, responsibility for the design, for the equipment selected, and for the execution remains with that office. We supply the calculation and our assessment of it.

Frequently asked questions

From what building size is this worthwhile?

Simulation shows its strength above all on larger buildings and on anything that departs from the norm — high glazing ratios, unusual use, borehole fields, retrofits with an unclear existing condition. For a conventional single-family house the effort is usually out of proportion.

What does a simulation cost?

That depends on scope and level of detail. In many projects the effort is smaller than the savings on the equipment, which is why we set out in advance what the simulation costs and where it is likely to pay off.

Does the simulation replace the design heat load calculation?

No. The calculated design heat load remains the basis for sizing. The simulation adds the annual behavior and shows how often the design conditions actually occur.

Do you calculate for other engineering offices?

Yes, regularly. Not every office has the tools and the routine for dynamic simulation. We take on the calculation as a standalone commission while the design stays with the commissioned office.

Do we get the simulation file?

We release native files on request and against compensation. What is binding are the reports we have released, because a model file without the associated assumptions is open to misinterpretation.
