Greywater reuse

Shower water flushing the toilet? Absolutely sensible — and already reality in Switzerland.

Greywater — the relatively clean waste water from showers, bathtubs and washbasins — contains valuable heat and can be reused after treatment, for example for toilet flushing or irrigation.

In our project in Zurich's Girhaldenstrasse, we implemented Switzerland's first greywater reuse system with heat recovery: the heat is extracted from the shower water via a heat exchanger, and the treated water is reused in the building.

The result: significantly less drinking water consumption, lower energy costs for hot water — and a building that shows what is already possible today.

Greywater systems are particularly worthwhile for buildings with many residents: apartment buildings, hotels, care homes and sports facilities.
